Latham Park ablaze with hot-hitting Phoenix baseball

An almost-no-hitter. A grand slam. A come-from-behind victory. The Elon Phoenix baseball team used all three to begin the 2012 season on the right foot, picking up three victories in all of their games this past weekend over non-conference opponents. “It’s kinda early to tell, but the areas that we thought we would be good at, we did those things well,” Phoenix head coach Mike Kennedy said.

Transferring schools is never an easy decision. Elon junior pitcher Nate Young knows this first-hand. He started his pitching career at his high school in Kalamazoo, Mich., spent a year at a small junior college in Robinson, Illinois.

Elon freshmen face stiff transition to college ball

Division I baseball means high competition, fast speed and elite talent. Transitioning from the high school level to Division I standards is an adjustment that all Elon varsity athletes must make in their first year of college. Thirteen new players will join the Phoenix baseball team this season, filling the shoes of recent graduates. A combination of work ethic and ability along with experience that will come in the next few months will morph these young players into college athletes. “They’ve got to grow up fast,” head coach Mike Kennedy said.  “They’re going to be in for a rude awakening in terms of the energy level that it takes to play at this level.” Energy is only one factor that freshmen players must embrace at the college level.  They must also adapt to changes that come with differing practice methods, managing time off of the field and dealing with being a full-time student athlete. “You can definitely tell there’s a transition from the speed of the game from high school to college,” said junior outfielder Niko Fraser.  “Sometimes it takes a little bit longer to adjust.” Elon has been practicing for weeks in preparation for the upcoming season, working the freshmen onto the field.

2024 Earth Week keynote speaker offers advice on coping with climate anxiety

Britt Wray, author of “Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in the Age of Climate Anxiety,” spoke to Elon University on April 24 as the 2024 keynote speaker for Earth week. Wray began by linking the idea that major fossil fuel companies, powerful lawyers and lobbyists choose to ignore damages inflicted by businesses. These efforts, according to Wray, have hindered people from taking action to stop them — which Wray deemed a global crime scene. She said by 2070, an estimated 19% of the planet will be inhabitable due to increases in global warming.

Office of sustainability hosts events across campus

Elon’s office of sustainability plans events throughout the year in collaboration with other student organizations, according to Kelly Harer, associate director of sustainability for education and outreach. Elon is focusing on improving sustainability efforts specifically waste reduction. A system Elon uses to measure its sustainability efforts is the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System. Based on data from Elon’s submission Feb. 11, 2022, which is valid until March 16, 2025, Elon received a silver rating, earning 59.12 points out of 100. The points are broken down in different categories across academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration and innovation and leadership.
