DURHAM, NC — Elon University’s women’s volleyball team lost to the Duke University Blue Devils in straight sets (20-25, 22-25, 16-25). Despite absorbing much of the Blue Devils attack, the Phoenix was unable to generate enough offense to take a set in Durham.

Elon Women’s soccer (5-3) advanced to its first ever CAA conference championship after defeating the No.1 seed Hofstra Pride (7-1-1) 1-0. The defense prevented scoring opportunities for Hoftsra and allowed the offense to lift Elon to the finals.

Coming into the 2020-21 season the Elon men’s basketball team had much to live up to. But just like in many other parts of life, the coronavirus pandemic took over, sending the season into disarray. The Phoenix have been through a lot in the past three months, and this is where they stand now.

Elon Men’s Basketball (2-0) downed the High Point University Panthers (0-2) 76-75 tonight in Schar Center. The Phoenix struggled to maintain a solid lead over the Panthers, but when it mattered most sophomore guard Hunter McIntosh brought Elon its second straight win.

It’s been nine months since Elon men’s basketball has played. Tonight the winding road to the 2020-21 season was capped by a 82-52 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College. But the season-opening victory was about more than basketball.

Elon women’s basketball downed the tenth-seeded Hofstra Pride 71-51 in the opening round of the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Championship. This is the first time the Schar Center has played host to a basketball conference tournament.

Freshman guard Hunter McIntosh was named the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. McIntosh was joined by fellow freshman guard Hunter Woods as members of the CAA All-Rookie team this year. Graduate transfer guard Marcus Sheffield II was named to the All-CAA second team.

There is a new leader behind the crease for Elon University’s women’s lacrosse. Two main point scorers led the team last year: sophomore Mae McGlynn and freshman Kaley Thompson. Current freshman midfield/attack Hannah McCarthy is taking up a major role on offense.

Every day, Elon University athletes shuffle through the doors of Alumni Gym. They take a right down the hallway with a sign on the wall that reads, “Academic Support for Athletics.” At the end of the hallway is a pod of offices where athletes and advisers meet to discuss everything from class schedules to life goals.

Elon Football added 20 new players to its 2020 roster as a part of National Signing Day Feb. 5, 2020. The recruiting class consists of 14 freshmen and six transfer students, three of whom came from Power Five conferences.

October is a month filled with change for defensive back Greg Liggs Jr., a change that came in the form of inflicting fear in opposing offenses. Liggs Jr. recorded seven interceptions in three games this past month. This feat instantly propelled Liggs Jr. to the top of the conference interception list. His career mark is now at 14 interceptions — an Elon Division I record.

Though Elon University women’s soccer team has spent five years in the Colonial Athletic Association, the Phoenix has not had a champion come from the soccer pitch. This is the first year the door is open.
