The 2019-2020 school year officially began on August 19 in Schar Center as President Connie Book welcomed faculty and staff back to campus with her annual opening address. The address focused heavily on the strategic plan for the next decade, which will be finalized and named in the fall.

Aswani Volety has been named the next provost of Elon University, following the departure of Steven House. Volety most recently served as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and executive director for the Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

On Monday, May 13, a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) officer made the recommendation to the NLRB Regional Officer to overrule an objection filed by Elon University against the Service Employees International Union, Workers United Southern Region (SEIU)-backed push for non-tenure-track faculty members to unionize at Elon. The university and SEIU will have one week to respond to the recommendation.

Elon police reported around 1:25 a.m. on April 24 they responded to an incident at 1291 Elon Crossing Drive. This address is located in a mobile home development about a mile from campus. No students were involved in the incident.

Elon University men’s basketball head coach Matt Matheny has been fired following an 11-21 (7-11 in CAA) season. Matheny coached 10 years for the Phoenix — five years in the Southern Conference and five years in the Colonial Athletic Association. Matheny will leave Elon with an overall record of 151-169. This comes days after three players entered their names into the NCAA Transfer Portal with hopes to leave Elon.

Elon University men’s basketball fell for the fourth straight year in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament in North Charleston, South Carolina. This year, it was at the hands of the University of North Carolina Wilmington 93-86.
