Another major event is set to take place at the Schar center.

Elon University women’s hoops will tip-off their season against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Tar Heels at the newly constructed Schar Center arena. The Phoenix will play three days prior to the men's basketball team, who will also face UNC at home.

Elon’s Women’s Head Coach Charlotte Smith once played and coached Carolina herself. She was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1994 NCAA tournament after hitting the championship winning buzzer-beater for the Tar Heels.

Smith was also a part of the UNC women’s basketball staff where she was the assistant coach alongside Sylvia Hatchell, who has been the Tar Heels coach since 1986. In the span of nine years (2002-2011), the Tar Heels reached the final four twice and were Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament Champions four times while Smith was a coach.

This face-off between the two schools is the third time in five seasons. In both 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 seasons, the maroon and gold traveled to Chapel Hill. The last time the two teams met on the hardwood, Elon was trailing by only one point at the start of the fourth quarter. The game marks the first time the Tar Heels will travel to Elon since the 1970s.

The newly constructed 5,100-seat facility is set to be the new home for Elon basketball and volleyball teams, and will also host major university events, such as convocation speakers and commencement.
