The Elon University women's basketball team is safe and en route back to North Carolina after feeling the aftershocks of a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in central Italy.

The team has spent the last 10 days traveling and playing in Italy in conjunction with Elon's study abroad program. On Tuesday, they were in Rome, about 70 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake.

According to a statement from Dan Wyar, director of communications for athletics, the team was on a flight from Florence, Italy, to Charlotte as of Wednesday morning.
