Selena Gomez just revealed some pretty jaw dropping news, and we're really sad about it.

Selena broke her silence about her lupus diagnosis with Billboard magazine's Oct. 17 issue. She revealed that she has already gone through chemotherapy and really has kept this news under wraps with the media.

But what is lupus? According to Yahoo Health, "Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of a person’s body," — Howard R. Smith, MD, director of the Lupus Clinic at the Cleveland Clinic.

"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy. That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke," Selena told Billboard.

Selena had spent some time out of the spotlight and both the fans and the media questioned her reasons for hanging low.

"I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're assholes.' I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again," she explained.

With the help of friends such as Taylor Swift, Selena explained that she felt like she could in fact get through this.

“Taylor makes me feel empowered, like I can trust new people,” she told Billboard. “The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.”

Nick Cannon, Seal and Toni Braxton are just a few other celebrities who suffer from this disease. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that may not always be life-threatening, but does call for a change in one's lifestyle.

We wish Selena the best of luck with her new album and hope to continue to see her stay strong and healthy.
