Residence Life sent out an email earlier today on how to prevent mold in mildew in resident halls on campus. Due to the high levels of humidity in North Carolina, as well as the incorrect thermostat settings, moisture can condense inside dorms and create an environment that creates mold and mildew.

Tips that will help prevent both mold and mildew include:

  • Reporting any water problems as soon as you discover it by submitting a FIXIT request, which can be found at Elon.edu/ifixit
  • Turn on the fan in the bathroom when showering
  • Clean your area, including your shower lining often
  • Wipe water off counters and soft surfaces
  • During the summer do not set the thermostat below 72 degrees, and never below 68 in the winter
  • Don't leave wet towels on the ground, always hang to dry
  • Do not prop doors leading to the outside or windows open
  • Report any mold or mildew you see
