Anyone who says cake is only meant for birthdays and weddings is wrong. They’ve obviously never been to Maxie B’s Bakery and Dessert Café. Just 20 miles down the road in Greensboro lies this little piece (or slice) of heaven on earth, perfect for any Elon University student looking for a sweet pick-me-up or just an excuse to leave “The Bubble.”

Don’t let its location in a strip fool you. This quaint bakery catches your eye right from the start with its homey and cozy décor. Warmly lit chandeliers lead the way to your perfect slice of cake. With 37 different cake flavors baked fresh daily, chances are you’ll have a slight panic attack when it comes time to order. From classic birthday cake to their zesty 7-Up cake, it’s hard to make the wrong decision. They even offer seasonal cakes, like a white chocolate peppermint cake during Christmastime and — every Girl Scout cookie lover’s dream — a Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookie cake only available from late winter until the cookies are gone.

If you’re not a cake person (seriously though, who isn’t?), no need to worry. Maxie B’s offers a selection of other desserts, like uniquely flavored cupcakes, key lime pie and assorted cheesecakes.

I recommend the apple cake with caramel cream cheese frosting. Easily the best slice of cake I’ve ever had. The frosting was perfectly sweet with just a hint of butterscotch, while the cake was moist and spongy but light enough to not leave me feeling like I needed to be rolled home. Putting this cake in my mouth was kind of like a religious experience. I’m pretty sure I saw the light.

No matter what cake you choose at Maxie B’s Bakery and Dessert Café, you won’t leave disappointed. But if you really can’t decide, just try ‘em all. No judgment here.
