In the world of political warfare, there are few boundaries that will not be crossed. Just this morning, The Daily Beast proved this point with its grave allegations against current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The post initially stated that Donald’s ex-wife, Ivana, accused the business tycoon of marital rape, but she has since set the record straight.

“The story is totally without merit,” Ivana said. “Donald and I are the best of friends and together have raised three children that we love and are very proud of.”

And while she did clarify the facts, the story still seems a bit tangled. The Daily Beast correctly quoted Ivana as stating in a 1989 testimony that her husband had raped her. Now going back on her word, Ivana remarks that Donald’s absence during their decades of marriage is what she refers to as “rape” of sorts. It seems unlikely that in this day and age a woman would refer to any degree of loneliness or emotional abandonment as rape, knowing the seriousness of such an allegation.

Could Ivana’s recent statement be a political cover-up to save the presidential candidate’s now leading poll numbers? With the issue of rape at hand, we can only hope that our justice system does not write this incident off without great investigation, no matter the name on the lawsuit.
