Lady Gaga performed musical legend John Lennon’s "Imagine" at the European Games Open Ceremony last night, and reminded us all that the girl is more than singsong hits and over-the-top ensembles.

Kicking off the Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, Gaga belted out the inspirational rock anthem in front of thousands of mesmerized onlookers. Paying homage to Lennon with a deep and melodic rendition, the queen of pop made the song her own when she ended the performance with theatrical high notes and plenty of soul.

Known for her catchy pop hits like “Bad Romance” and “Love Game,” Gaga took a risk performing the 70s best-seller, but it definitely paid off. Having performed another classic, an operatic Sound of Music performance, at the Oscars just last year, the singer proved yet again that she is not afraid to test her bounds.

So, with two award-worthy classic covers and endless Billboard number one hits, there is little doubt that Gaga is well on her way to multi-generational superstar sensation.
