The Elon University women’s lacrosse team fell to the University of Delaware on Sunday 8-6. With the loss, the Phoenix remains winless in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Delaware’s high-powered offense overwhelmed the Phoenix early in the contest. After a 1-1 tie early in the first half, the Blue Hens scored four unanswered goals, including two from junior attacker Casey Lyons.

Elon scored a second time when sophomore attacker Anna Vitton netted a free-position attempt, but Delaware with a pair of goals to take a 7-2 lead at halftime.

The Phoenix offense established a rhythm in the second half.

Freshman midfielder Stephanie Asher and freshman attacker Nicole Sinacori got four combined goals to put Elon in striking distance. Asher scored with 8:09 remaining in game to narrow the deficit to two. But it was too little, too late as time expired.

Sophomore goalie Rachel Ramirez had a solid outing in the loss, making 14 saves. The Phoenix was efficient on offense, taking just nine shots, all of which were on goal. The struggled defensively though and allowed too many easy scoring opportunities. By the end of the day, Elon committed 14 turnovers.

The loss puts the Phoenix at 7-5 overall on the season with an 0-2 record in Colonial Athletic Association play. Delaware moves to 9-4 (2-0 CAA).

Elon continues its CAA road trip on April 10 at 7 p.m. against the James Madison Dukes. This will be the final regular season road game schedule for the Phoenix.
