The Elon University women’s softball team defeated Hampton University 4-3 on Friday.

The teams were tied going into the bottom of the ninth when freshman shortstop Hannah Olson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score senior third baseman Aly Quintana and give the Phoenix the win.

Through two innings, the teams were tied at 1-1. However, Elon scored in the bottom of the third when freshman leftfielder Kara Shutt singled, scoring freshman second baseman Madison Kadlic and giving the Phoenix a 2-1 lead. Elon would score again in the bottom of the fourth, when Olson doubled to score freshman pitcher Kiandra Mitchum.

The Pirates fought back, scoring a run in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at three, as senior pitcher Chelsea White gave up 3 hits. The game was tied until the bottom of the ninth when the Phoenix sealed the victory.

White would pick up the win on the mound for the Phoenix, pitching four innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Starting junior pitcher Kayla Caruso pitched three innings, giving up a single run on three hits.

Olson lead the way on offense for Elon, going 1-4 with two RBIs. Shutt was also 1-4, with one RBI. The Phoenix had a total of six hits, two of which were doubles.

With the victory, Elon moves to 12-5 on the season, including an impressive 8-1 record at home. The Phoenix has its next game on Mar. 11, when it travels to Charlotte, to take on the University of North Carolina at Charlotte at 5 p.m.
