The Elon University women’s basketball team put a halt to its two-game losing streak on Thursday, Feb. 19 against the Northeastern University Huskies in a 74-73 victory for the Phoenix.

A jumper by senior guard Sam Coffer, with two seconds remaining, sealed the win for the Phoenix after a mostly up and down battle throughout the game.

Elon shot a season-high 59 percent from the field, and finished shooting 43 percent from three-point range as the Phoenix held a 40-26 advantage in points over the Huskies.

Sophomore guard Lauren Brown and senior guard Zora Stephenson led Elon in scoring with 13 points each. Freshman guard Shay Burnett and senior guard Essence Baucom also registered double-figure points with each scoring 10.

In the first half the Phoenix opened up the game on a 10-2 run, that included three-pointers from Brown and Stephenson, to gain a 14-6 lead after five minutes of play. The Huskies would respond by gaining a 21-19 lead of its own with just under 10 minutes to play in the half.

Northeastern would maintain its play over Elon up until the end of the half, as the Phoenix scored a quick lay-up just before the buzzer from Coffer to earn a 41-40 lead as both teams entered its locker rooms.

Multiple lead changes and runs by both teams highlighted the second half up until the game ended. Both teams traded three-point shots with under four minutes to play as the Huskies hit a shot from beyond the arc to give it a 71-67 advantage.

Leading up to Coffer’s game-winning shot, Baucom would make a pair of free-throws at the 1:22 mark to make it a one-point game at 73-72 in Northeastern’s favor.

The Phoenix will return to Alumni Gym on Sunday, Feb. 22 to host the College of William & Mary. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
