WILMINGTON — After 92 minutes of hard-fought, end-to-end action, the Elon University men’s soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to the Ohio State University in the team’s second and final game at the UNC Wilmington Courtyard Wilmington / Wrightsville Beach Classic on Sept. 7.

Though both teams had a bevy of chances to find the back of the net in both halves, it was the Buckeyes who found the back of the net in the second minute of the first overtime period.

Junior forward Joao Ehlers, a late substitute, hit a rocket from 18 yards out that deflected off a Phoenix defender and past senior goalkeeper Nathan Dean and into the back of the net for the game’s lone goal.

The Phoenix end the two-game tournament at 1-1 after beating Winthrop University on Friday.

With the win, Ohio State moves to 1-0-3 on the year, while Elon drops to 2-2.

The Phoenix will host Florida International University Wednesday in its first home match of the season, a midweek non-conference game. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
