Tim Sweeney is returning to upstate New York.

Elon men's basketball associate head coach Tim Sweeney is leaving to take the head coaching job at Hobart College, a Division III school in Geneva, N.Y. Hobart is 46 miles from the University of Rochester, where Sweeney played his college ball and had his first assistant coaching job.

Hobart announced the move Monday after a coaching search that lasted nearly a month.

Sweeney, 33, has spent the last five years under Elon coach Matt Matheny. With him on staff, the Phoenix has tallied 77 wins.

Prior to that, Sweeney spent a year at Bucknell University and two seasons at Davidson College with Matheny under Bob McKillop.

“My time at Elon has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Sweeney said in a statement.  “The program is in an exciting and great place moving forward into the Colonial Athletic Association with a great group of young men who are committed to being the best they can be. I have been fortunate to work with such great people during my stay here.”

Sweeney replaces Mike Neer, who retired after three years at Hobart and 37 total years as a collegiate coach. Neer coached Sweeney at Rochester, and Sweeney became an assistant under Neer after he graduated in 2003.

Hobart went 22-7 last year and advanced to the second round of the Division III NCAA Tournament. The program has had four straight 20-win seasons and has appeared in the NCAA Tournament each of the last three years.
