An armed robbery was reported Monday morning at Jay's Mart, a convenience store located about a mile east of Elon University at 951 East Haggard Ave.

According to an email about the incident from Vice President of Student Life Smith Jackson, a male suspect displayed a blue handgun, before fleeing the scene on a black and orange moped eastbound on East Haggard. The Town of Elon police report says the suspect held the cashier at gun point and took an undisclosed amount of money.

The email from Jackson describes the suspect as being approximately 5'10'' tall and 150 pounds, dressed in a black t-shirt and blue jeans with a black helmet and red bandanna tied around his face.

Anybody with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the police by calling 911, or contacting the Town of Elon Police at 336-584-1301 or the Elon University Police Department at 336-278-5555.

In the email, Jackson also urged Elon students and staff to follow the following safety measures:

  • All Elon University students, faculty, staff, guests and visitors are reminded to report suspicious people immediately by calling 911, on campus ext. 5555 or using one of the emergency blue light phones on campus.
  • Do not leave your property, vehicles, homes or residence halls unsecured.
  • Use the Campus Safety and Police on campus escort program by calling ext. 5555.
  • Walk in pairs or groups, especially during the evening and night.
  • Travel on well lit, busy areas and always remain aware of your surroundings. Do not become distracted by talking on your cell phone or listening to music through headphones on a high volume.
