After dropping its previous two matches, the Elon University women’s tennis team got back to its winning ways with a 7-0 sweep of Wofford College March 22 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Phoenix rolled on all three doubles courts, not losing more than three games in any match.  Senior Frida Jansaker and junior Maria Camara Ruiz got things going on court No. 2, breezing by freshman Catherine Martin and sophomore Mareli Sanchez, 8-1.

Elon’s No. 1 pairing of senior Jordan Johnston and junior Barbora Lazarova followed with an 8-1 victory of their own to earn the doubles point.  Senior Bryn Khoury and sophomore Taylor Casey then defeated freshmen Taylor Carlson and Kalli Karas of Wofford, 8-3, to finish doubles play.

Casey kept it rolling into singles play, as she picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Carlson to give Elon a 2-0 lead.  The Phoenix lead stretched to 3-0 when Camara Ruiz finished off her 6-1, 6-3 win on court No. 5.  Jansaker later clinched the match by defeating junior Audrey Coventry, 6-1, 6-3, on court No. 2.

Lazarova, Khoury and Johnston all followed with wins on their respective courts to complete the sweep for Phoenix, the sixth sweep in its last seven wins.

The win snapped a two-match losing streak for the Phoenix, which had lost its previous two matches against Wake Forest University March 16 and Furman University March 21.

Elon improves to 9-6 on the season and 3-1 in the Southern Conference.  The victory over the Terriers marked the ninth straight time Elon has defeated Wofford.

The Phoenix will hit the road for the next four matches, the first of which will be played April 1 against Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.  Elon will not return to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center until the final match of the regular season April 12.
