Behind a final round 71 from senior John Somers, the Elon University men’s golf team placed fifth out of 18 teams at the Furman Intercollegiate March 28-30 in Greenville, S.C.

The Phoenix finished with a final score of 881, 17 strokes over par at the Furman University Golf Course. Elon had combined rounds of 295, 290 and 296 in its three rounds.

Somers finished tied for 14th place out of 111 golfers with a final score of 218, just two strokes over par. He shot rounds of 75, 72 and 71. Somers shot four birdies in his final round and 13 overall.

Following Somers were senior Stuart Kaufman and sophomore Jonathan DiIanni, who shot combined scores of 221, good for a tie for 22nd place. Kaufman had rounds of 73, 74 and 74 while DiIanni shot 73, 70 and 78. DiIanni shot the Phoenix’s lone eagle during the tournament.

DiIanni’s brother, junior Will DiIanni, tied for 54th place with a score of 226 and rounds of 74, 79 and 73.

The final Phoenix finisher was senior Jack Adkins. Adkins shot 227, placing him in a tie for 59th place with rounds of 75, 74 and 78.

Georgia State University and Virginia Tech tied for the team title at the event with team scores of 855, nine strokes under par.

Virginia Tech junior Trevor Cone won the individual portion of the event with a score of 205, 11 under par. The Concord, N.C., native shot rounds of 66, 69 and 70.
