The Elon University men’s golf team began its 2014 spring season at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Feb. 17-18 in Hilton Head, S.C. The Phoenix finished the event tied for seventh place with Francis Marion University at a combined score of 900 for the 54-hole event. That score placed Elon at 36 over par for the tournament, as the Phoenix racked up combined scores of 294, 307 and 299 over the three rounds.

Individually, junior Will DiIanni finished tied for fourth with a total score of 221. DiIanni shot 71 in both his first and third rounds, one under par on the par-72 course. The Kernersville, N.C., resident shot a 79 in his middle round.

DiIanni’s brother Jonathan, a sophomore transfer to Elon, finished just two strokes back at 223, tying him for ninth. Jonathan DiIanni shot 76, 73, and 74 in his three rounds.

Sophomore Troy Beaver tied for 31st with a total score 227. Beaver shot 73 in his first round, but followed with two 77’s. Sophomore Jeff Krieger followed for Elon in a tie for 44th place. Krieger shot a total of 231 with rounds of 74, 80, and 77.

Rounding out the tournament for Elon was senior Jack Adkins, whose 241 placed him 74th. Adkins shot 77, 78 and 86 over the course of his rounds.

The University of South Carolina-Aiken won the team portion of the event with a final score of 888, and Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Adam Ball used a final-round 66 to claim the individual title.

Elon returns to action at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. Mar. 10-11.
