Elon University men’s tennis star Cameron Silverman won the Men’s National Open Indoor Championship defeating Wisconsin’s Quinton Vega in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. The senior from Mount Kisco, N.Y., topped the 151 player field made up predominately of players who come from or have ties to the northeast.

Silverman defeated fellow New Yorker, Wake Forest University’s Aws Laaribi 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals of the tournament before going on to defeat Vega in the final. The 2013 Southern Conference Player of the Year, Silverman, continued a strong start to 2014 by earning the No. 25 singles ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Silverman led the Phoenix to the SoCon regular season title in 2013 with a 14-8 record overall playing entirely in the No. 1 singles and doubles spots.

Silverman and the rest of the Phoenix will begin their 2014 campaign on Jan. 10-12 in Raleigh, N.C., when the team will compete in the N.C. State Invitational. The Phoenix will not play at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center until Feb. 8 when Norfolk State University comes to town. This will kick off four straight home matches for Elon including three matchups against in-state opposition University of North Carolina-Asheville, Campbell University, and Greensboro College.
