The Elon University men’s soccer team defeated Campbell University 1-0 in a game not unlike most of the Phoenix’s seven previous wins Tuesday Oct. 1. It was another win in which the Phoenix could only manage one goal and another game in which they had to protect a one goal lead for the majority of the second half.

Nevertheless, it was the Elon’s third win in a row, and moved the nationally ranked Phoenix to 8-1-1 on the season.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first, although both teams made the opposing team’s goalkeeper work to keep a clean sheet.

Despite a number of close calls, neither team could break through until the 49th minute, when senior midfielder Matt Wescoe netted his 3rd goal on the year to score the game’s lone goal.

Junior defenseman Austin Dunker hit a left-footed serve into the box that junior forward Jason Waterman was able to deflect back toward the top of the box, where Wescoe was waiting. His one-timer beat Camels senior goalkeeper Ethan Hall and provided the difference in the game.

The Phoenix, ranked No. 21 in the country, will return home to Rudd field for an Oct. 5 match against Appalachian State University in the Phoenix’s first conference game of the season. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
