From Elon University's Department of Psychology:

We, the members of the Department of Psychology, do not tolerate and publicly denounce all acts of bias and discrimination, including acts of hate speech and imagery. As psychologists, we will continue working to study and understand the full range of human behavior and experience from multiple perspectives. As educators and members of this community, we will continue working to promote and support the psychological well-being and value of all faculty, staff, and students of Elon University.

From Elon University's Inclusive Community Council:

Elon Community Members,

As we work toward a better understanding of difference and celebration of diversity, the ICC would encourage us to remember our commitment to each other to live together in a diverse and inclusive community where we respect the dignity and worth of each member. We condemn acts of bias and hate and will speak and act out against them.  We ask that each of you recommit to disrupting bias when you witness it and work to create solidarity across the Elon community against hateful speech, acts and displays.

Last Spring and this fall, members of our Elon community faced racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic and sexist comments, acts and behaviors within our community.  We know that these incidents might be underreported.  We also know that they are rare and that our community quickly acts in condemnation of such acts of hate and in support of persons and communities targeted by such acts.  In moments of crisis or heightened energy, it feels important to reaffirm our stance against such acts.  It also feels important to remind our community of our response protocol and of available resources.  When an act of bias or hate is reported, our immediate reposes include:

  • Emergency (or, in the moment) response to the targeted students.
  • Follow up from the Office of Inclusive Community Well-Being to the targeted students, areas/others impacted and response (if warranted) to a broader range of students in the days following an incident.
  • Activation of the Inclusive Community Education Team who will work with other impacted groups to develop an educational response open to the entire community.
  • Activation of the campus Student Conduct process (if applicable).
  • Notification of other senior staff members.
We also have ongoing educational opportunities for our entire campus community such as the Anti Defamation League's "A Campus of Difference" program tailored for Elon's community.
