The Elon University women’s tennis team continued their recent dominance over in-state opponents with a thrilling 4-3 win over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Seahawks Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, at the UNCW Courts in Wilmington, N.C.

The win is Elon’s seventh in a row after dropping their opening match to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the then eighth-ranked team in the country, on January 21st.

Elon got off to a sluggish start, dropping two doubles matches to put themselves in an immediate hole. Junior Bryn Khoury, however, would register the team’s first win, beating Seahawks junior Christine Kharkevich in three sets in the No. 4 singles position.

Junior Frida Jansaker then knotted the match at two apiece with a straight set win in the No. 2 singles spot.

Tied at three, Phoenix sophomore Maria Camara Ruiz sealed Elon’s seventh win with a three set victory against senior Christina Riley in the No. 2 singles match.

The Phoenix are now one win away from tying their longest winning streak at the Division 1 level of eight, which was set by the 2010 squad that finished the year 16-7 overall, 6-4 in conference play.

Elon returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center tomorrow when they play host to the Radford University Highlanders at 2 p.m. The match was postponed from Tuesday, Feb. 19 due to rain.
