Like so many of my peers, one of the reasons why I selected to attend Elon University was due to its commitment to the study abroad program. As a Teaching Fellow, I am required to travel to either London or Costa Rica during the spring semester of my sophomore year. But phrasing it as an obligation does not seem appropriate in this context. It may be more fitting to say that I am fortunate enough to have this opportunity of a lifetime.

Once I was named as a Teaching Fellow, I knew that I would have to choose between the two destinations. Both are so very different from one another, yet so enticing. As a generally indecisive person, I wrestled with the selections. Both places seemed to have a long list of pros and relatively few cons. Nonetheless, I ultimately picked London.

After reflecting upon the decision making process, I can say with confidence that London is the right choice for me. I will be exposed to a culture that is different from my own while also being similar in many ways, allowing me to easily adjust to my new surroundings. I am excited to live in flats with other Elon students so that we can experience the city together. I also hope to take advantage of the countless travel opportunities that exist.

During my stay, I will be taking classes through the Elon Centre. Just as if I was on campus, engaged learning will be heavily emphasized in all my courses. I will study London Theatre by attending a show on a weekly basis. Through visiting the Olympic stadium, I will learn about sustainable cities and public health. I will acquire more knowledge about British history by taking tours around the city. And, most importantly, after taking a practicum in a British school, I hope to become a better future educator.

The reality of it all has not quite hit me yet. Regardless, I am beyond excited to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Though my friends and family will be dearly missed, I can feel at ease knowing that I have their full support while abroad. I hope to soak in every moment of my experience and take nothing for granted. I am beyond blessed to have this opportunity and I cannot wait to see what the future holds!
