COPENHAGEN - Against all odds, the Danes proudly celebrated their national handball team’s success in the European men’s championships at Radhuspladsen, otherwise known as the town hall square Jan. 30. Hundreds of people gathered at the square to catch a glimpse of the national men’s handball team, eagerly waving the Dannebrog, or Danish flag.

After barely gaining a spot in the semi-finals, it seemed unlikely that Denmark would achieve the gold. The team went on to a dramatic win against Spain, continuing to the finals against Serbia.

The tournament was held in Belgrade, Serbia. Despite Serbia’s home court advantage and a key penalty putting Denmark a man down, the Danish team managed to secure a victory.

Danish player Mikkel Hansen played a key role in Denmark’s last win. The gold medal in the European men’s handball championship secures Denmark a qualifying spot in this year’s London Olympics.
