How very little do I know of the world! Costa Rica, one of the few countries to have abolished its army, to pioneer a compulsory sense of environmental preservation (to view a lush environment as an economic asset is relatively exceptional) and to project in its cultural identity firstly the virtues of humanness and kinship, says how much indeed. Furthermore, abolishing military aims led to investment in education instead. Increased schooling created a more stable society, less prone to the conflicts that have raged elsewhere in Central America that seem to collectively give Americans a negative impression of every nation from Mexico down. These characteristics give Costa Rica a marked distinction among Central and South American nations – one somewhat peculiar, fascinating and largely unknown.

How Costa Rican society has reached a height of happiness (it's No. 1 on the Happy Planet Index) likely eludes an exact conclusion in sociological research, but it seems the country has achieved contentment and longevity in an environmentally sustainable way. Whether or not a sense of ecological obligation will arise over the course of this experience, I am not sure. Although, my understanding may evolve throughout the journey of everyday lifestyles and sustainability not only co-existing, but also working in harmony when joined correctly.

American society generally perceives professional dedication as virtuous and noteworthy, likely to place financial above social capital. Societies that thrive on the cornerstone of development and productivity are all that I know. Stepping back, literally breathing in air from a mountainside as I hope I will, to muse and render the social values in my life as most important, is a rarity here. Adapting to a culture nearly antithetical in terms of value-structure will not occur without a shock. Central American life will be life anew for me. Perhaps, it will be as happy as they say.

Through and through, the study abroad experience, almost inherent in an Elon education, offers more opportunity for adventure and personal growth than any I’ve ever known. Whether considering the courses, the foods, the places, the peopleRe or simply the sunshine – I have only great expectations. From the moment I got on that plane, I’ll never be the same.

Keep checking the International Blog for reflections, observations and experiences from Elon University students currently studying abroad.
